Flooding rivers deposit sediments that gradually nurture islands, which eventually merge into vast expanses of land. On ancient maps, the waxing and waning of coastlines trace ever-changing geographical patterns, reflecting the historical journey of humanity living in tandem with nature. Within these layered and intertwined landforms, the soil becomes a vessel of memory, accumulating the wisdom of our ancestors. It records the traces of human migration, cultivation, and settlement along the border between sea and land, concealing the past within its layers. Remnants of ancient artifacts endure, much like the winding waterways on old maps and the tightly intertwined plant roots that mend fractures and allow what is broken to persist. By constructing countless embankments and weaving myriad threads, I build earthen walls and accumulate stratified landscapes. Employing age-old building materials such as oyster shells, sugar water, and glutinous rice, I blend the human body with artifacts. Today, traces of this ancient material can still be found at Anping Old Fort and Madou Old Port. They all relate to the idea of containers — embankments, pots, and even the human body — which hold water, memory, and feeling. The floor features a unique glass window that reveals its underground structure. Inside, I placed two blocks made of sanhé soil with varying thicknesses, their forms inspired by stone steles used as mile markers along embankment. Spanning across a slope that overlooks a mountain view, the installation is arranged in a staggered formation, allowing the forms to engage in a silent dialogue with the natural environment. It reflects the invisible flows of energy in nature and the alternation and cycles between materials. Time feels condensed into a moment of surging vitality, where the elemental forces of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water find balance. The winding path follows the railway, with tar-covered sturdy sleepers and scattered gravel on the ground guiding our direction. The route cuts through rich, untouched mountain forests, presenting a unique landscape and materials shaped by natural processes. Along the way, neatly stacked sleepers are visible, and the gaps between them bear traces of various animals, plants, soil, and stones. Sunlight spills into these spaces, and life undergoes continuous changes within these tiny crevices. Each gap seems to capture different dimensions of time and space, embracing the cyclical nature of all life from ancient to present. Water, molecules, cells, fungi, seeds, eggs, rocks, dust, and planets orbit around us, intertwining and accumulating. Being within these stages, one perceives the surrounding things and discerns their location. By crossing the wall, one gains a clear understanding of the wall's appearance. In past creations, I attempted to understand the influence of family relationships on individuals through my own body. At each stage of creation, I would look back and re-experience those specific moments of memory. This time, I am trying to immerse myself in all things, using sound conduction to awaken subtle memories. microscopic view for audiences to rest sights on specific objects, and bring them to further read in the interpretation of old tape recorder and film tapes. It blends the imagination of exhibition space with the revisit of life scene, and targets on the discussion of the meaning of specific objects toward one’s life experience.The artist vaguely remembers that there used to be a family videotape that recorded some of the significant moments in his young life. The reason why this video is special is that it was filmed by the artist’s stepfather. Through the eyes of the stepfather to record the family’s life, the contradiction hidden behind can be felt from the shaking image. Those yearning memories came back to the artist when he moved up north. He realized the tape was left inside of the recorder afterward. Those people, incidents, and places in the video that once existed were exposed again after the passing six to seven years. Located in a basement where audiences can only enter through a downward one-way entrance, its low ceiling, crossbeam, exposed pipelines, staggered structures, and the air conditioning system all bring a clandestine and mechanic character to the exhibition space. In this work, the artist, as the photographer like his stepfather who recorded his family before. The sight took place from a photographer’s eyes looking toward a gigantic tin factory built by reinforcement, filled with piled-up furniture, catering equipment, and metal products, indicating the environment where the mother of the artist worked and lived. The factory is also the place where the artist lived when he was young. The two scenes above corresponded with one another. In the video, the mother slowly dismantled the tape recorder one by one in the house-like factory building until it could never be repaired. The flashback childhood image memory then broke and disappeared. At this moment, he returned to his former role as his stepfather, watching his family's life through his eyes. 渠道、膠卷與機器 水、鐵、不鏽鋼、泵浦 / 單頻道錄像尺寸依場地而定 / 錄像長度 11分39秒2019 - 2021 本件作品向觀眾展示了一種微觀的視野，藝術家試圖將視線聚焦在個人生命中特定物件的觀察上―舊式錄放影機與膠卷錄影帶的想像與重新詮釋。其中，揉雜展場空間的想像以及生命經驗場景的重新觀看，聚焦在「特定物件之於個人的生命意義」上。曾有一卷家庭錄影帶，記錄了藝術家年幼生命中一些重要的時刻，這卷錄影帶之所以別具意義，因為它是由繼父所拍攝的，透過繼父的雙眼紀錄家人的生活，從搖晃的影像中可以感受到隱藏在背後的矛盾。直到他北上一人生活，想起了那些令人懷念的年幼時光。原來，那卷錄影帶被擱置在當初拍攝的錄影機中。六七年過去了，影像中的人、事件及地方又重新地被顯影出來。 位處地下室的展場空間，須經由向下延伸的單一通道方能進入，低矮的天花板、橫樑、裸露的管線、交錯的結構或是安置其中的空調系統，帶有某種幽閉的機器性格。與此呼應的，是投影於展場深處的錄像作品，藝術家以拍攝者的身分，紀錄一座由鋼筋鐵皮搭建而成的巨大廠房，其中堆置各類樣式繁多的傢俱、餐飲設備和金屬製品，那是母親日復一日工作與生活的場所，同時也是藝術家年幼時曾經生活過的家。影像中，母親在家屋般的廠房內，緩慢地將錄影機一一拆解，直至永遠無法修復，回閃的兒時影像記憶，隨之斷裂與消逝。此刻，藝術家如同回到了從前與繼父相同的視角，透過雙眼觀看著家人的生命。 Charcoal and rock-pen on wallDimensions variable 2018 - 2019 While Sitting on the bus, departing from Hsinchu to Taipei, through the window was the view of the long stretched highways quivered in the air as chords, connecting the two vanishing points, disappeared in the ridge from a distance. With the view whisking, the city landscapes outside of the windows flung off before being carefully observed. Through multiple trips, the view of enormous chimney erecting the sky with smoke emission, industrial buildings resembling the circuit boards, and ventilation fans arrayed tidily on the rooftop of sheet metal houses, were all kept as distinctive scenes in the memories. The view of fleeting landscapes was restructured into the new inner life scenery in the artist’s mind. 空間製圖 炭筆和石筆繪於牆上、天頂鏡尺寸依場地而定2018 - 2019 Unmoored Variations Water, wood, damaged wardrobe, glass jar, pump, found objects120 × 140 × 190 cm2017 - 2022 Military villages are one of the unique living patterns constructed by the historical factors of Taiwanese society, being an important cultural asset. They form the cultural landscape of Taiwan by their architectural form, the function of the space, the occupation, daily routine, and interaction within the community of these residents, with the passing of time and devotion. A lot of these villages are demolished due to urban planning. Heart Village in Beitou District, Taipei City, is one of the few that has not been torn down, and therefore reserved the abundant culture of military villages. It originated from “Former Japanese Soldier Garrison Hospital Beitou Branch”, and the present Tri-Service General Hospital Beitou Branch. The forming of Heart Village has a strong bond with the development of the two hospitals mentioned above. The architectures in Heart Village were slowly reconstructed through time from the dormitory of nursing home built during the Japanese colonial period, demonstrating the military village-style from both the colonial and the R.O.C. period. The surrounding of the village carries a particular character of evolutionary change in time and space, giving a crucial explanation to the development of military villages. This work is made during the artist’s residency in Heart Village. The idea derived from the life experience of the military villages’ residents after the post-war migration to Taiwan. They were forced to move from city to city, fighting and fleeing from the hostile force during the war. They crossed Taiwan Strait, defeated the surge of the tide, endured the seasick and disease, after retreated from China. Their social identity shifted constantly due to the turbulent state of society and government after arriving in Taiwan. No one knew that they would be staying in Taiwan for 40 to 50 years, let alone their entire lives. This cabinet was tilted to the corner of the room when it was first discovered. With two hollow legs that have been eaten by termites, the cabinet was deformed and collapsed due to the incapability of supporting its own weight. The tilting and instability within the corruption, shows the damages caused by time. The qualities above linked the drifted experience of the residents to the medium of water, with their similarity in fluidity. Water is a constantly changing, unbounded, and unstable material. Its existence represents materiality within the special life experience of these residents. It was an extremely precious supply, as the water of life, during the war. It was the sinister tide while they were retreating.
